MEN!
So today I would like to talk about different cultures. I only have experience of 3 different once so far but I will try to do my best to compare and explain what I've experienced through out my travels. First off, being a swede! We are not as boring as we think we are. Yes, we ignore the person walking past us on the streets, we keep a lot of distance between us and the person next to us if we do not know them and we do not talk to strangers. We are basically not allowed to be better than anyone else and we do not have conversations with the cashiers in out local grocery store. BUT! The rest of the world thinks we are the nicest and most social people. So why is this? We get drunk! Or we go on vacation, and when we do we get drunk! No just kidding (not really) but yeah we tend to take the chance to be completely different people when we leave our comfort zone. I know this mostly out of my own experience but also from swedes I've met while traveling. When I'm in an other country I am extremely social. I talk to strangers, I say hello to people I meet on the streets and I am not afraid to stand next to an other person! It is like I'm a completely different person because as soon as I go back to Sweden I turn back in to being a typical swede, dull and unsocial. While americans on the other hand is always very social! They always seems so nice (but they are mostly faking it) because they say hello to the person they meet on the streets, they know how many kids the cashier at the local store has and they will always always ask you how you are doing. The last bit is not because they care but because it is nice to ask, it makes you feel better. I was walking around believing everyone was my friend the first week I lived in the states. They don't change going on vacation, they stay as loud and proud where ever they go! The British on the other had are definitely more quiet people than the americans but way to polite to be as rude as swedes! The britts are very social but still keep to the northern european shyness.
Next is what we do differently! If it is a nice summer day/evening swedes have a nice barbecue in the garden, they eat outside in the backyard and drink some cold alcoholic beverage. Americans drive to the beach or drink around a fire pit and the British on the other hand brings a blanket to the park together with everything that goes on the dinner table. I'm talking pots, plates, cups, utensils, food, wine and what ever else you might need for eating dinner in a park and I'm not talking about paper plates or plastic cups, I'm talking about the real deal here! I love the way how everyone just gathers in the parks as soon as the sun is out. It is also allowed to drink in the in public here which is very illegal in most states in America and in Sweden. You are missing out on so much making it illegal to drink in parks! It is the cutest thing seeing all of those first dates sitting on a blanket with a bottle of wine in the park by a little lake, or having a glas of wine or a beer with you picknick, or celebrating a birthday with champaign and a few drinks outside in the local park.. An other thing we do differently we swedes compared to the states and UK is that we kind of gather all of the social activities on the weekends. We work all week and go home falling asleep on the couch in the evening and then partying hard on the weekends. While both here in the UK and in the states they actually go out for dinner in the middle of the week or go to the local pub to have a few drinks. Brits even go out clubbing in the middle of the week partying all night and most dinner parties here in the UK seems to be happening during the weekdays. Why are we such a tired and unsocial breed we swedes?
Last of all I am going to compare British and American english worlds! So I'm talking american english and it has caused me a few misunderstandings and a lot of confucian with the kids here in the UK. So for me PANTS are like jeans or leggings or what ever while here PANTS mean underwear. They call what I know as pants for TROUSERS. Very confusing to try to get the kids dressed in the morning.. Then we have the american word COUCH, you know the thing you sit on, here they call it SOFA. DINNER is SUPPER and I've heard afternoon SNACK being called TEATIME. DIPER is a NAPPIE (like the British word better) and a PACIFIER is called a DUMMY. There we go, a few word that I've picked up that are different.
